In this conversation with Pivot Learning, Zaretta Hammond — author of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain — discusses the importance of strong racial literacy skills cultivated in professional learning to understand how inequities are perpetuated within our systems and address their underlying historically racist context.

Zaretta shares the example of how foundational skills have been deemed low level and are often not taught to Black and Brown students who have developed gaps in their learning, even though strong foundational skills are the path forward to high-level cognitive work.
