Director of Education Programs, Prevention and Intervention

About the Position

At Pivot we look for talented and inspiring colleagues who believe in public education and the imperative to support schools to innovate and improve. We are currently seeking a Director, Education Programs to join the Pivot team. This position will be responsible for managing projects in our Prevention & Intervention portfolio that support the systems of assessment, instruction, intervention, and support for every student in service of equitable student outcomes.

This position will be responsible for managing a multi-year grant funded project to support a model of learning recovery and continuous improvement that impacts outcomes for students with disabilities and other students with structural barriers to their success. In addition to working directly with the participating school districts, this project also focuses on further developing Pivot’s model of high-quality prevention and intervention services. This position will also contribute to additional grant and fee-for-service projects across the portfolio.

This is a full-time, Exempt position, reporting to a Vice President, Education Programs. Candidates for this position can be based anywhere in the US. Pivot is headquartered in Oakland, CA, however all staff are currently working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We anticipate Bay Area staff having the option to return to an in-office setting at a future date. Travel (car and air) will be required for this role, including regular travel to California and monthly or more travel to school districts, once regular travel resumes post-pandemic.

Key Responsibilities: Direct Delivery

  • Product Development. In collaboration with internal and external partners, play a lead role in the ongoing development of our overall prevention and intervention implementation model. This includes defining the specific processes, tools, and other resources that make up the model, and testing them with district clients and partners to ensure quality, sustainability, and scalability.
  • Project Management. Drives projects from launch through achievement of all grant or contract goals and deliverables. Develop and track project goals and manage project plans. Coordinate with colleagues, including our subsidiary CORE and support staff, to effectively scope, manage, align, and improve services provided to our district clients at all levels (state agency, district, principal, teacher, coach).
  • Meeting and Training Facilitation & Development. Develop agenda and trainings, including preparing for, facilitating, and following-up from professional learning events, small group, and 1:1 work sessions with clients and partners (virtual or in-person). This may include co-developing materials for district teams and partners.
  • Partnership and Business Development. Develop new, and maintain existing, partnerships with school district clients and other key partners. Leverage own professional network to grow Pivot’s impact through business development efforts.
  • Data Collection, Analysis, & Evaluation. Collaborate with district clients and partners to develop and execute measurement and evaluation plans for their district work, supporting districts to collect, analyze, and make decisions to improve their work and reach project goals. This will include working with district clients to secure data sharing agreements and collecting data to meet grant requirements. In addition, collaborate with the research and evaluation team at Pivot to evaluate the impact of this work, and make ongoing refinements. This may include data collection, analysis, writing, and reporting/presenting our data.
  • Communications & Marketing. Play a key role in developing and implementing communications for both the grant-funded project and Pivot’s overall prevention and intervention program. This may include developing written content, presenting our work through webinars or conferences, communicating about our work through social media, and joining conversations with prospective clients.
  • Grant Management. In partnership with Pivot’s development team, manage the project to successfully complete all grant deliverables. Support the districts to understand the grant deliverables and manage them to completion. Work with the Pivot development team to ensure that we are reporting to the funder according to grant requirements. Attend meetings with the grant program officers and other funder-led meetings.

  • A passion for Pivot’s vision and mission, a commitment to public education as a key lever for opportunity, and a desire to deepen the organization’s impact. A deep understanding of institutional and structural racism and bias, and how inequities impact equitable outcomes for students most underserved by our education system.
  • Experience working in and/or with K–12 education via Local Education Agencies (county offices, districts, or charters), especially those systems that target additional support or interventions for students in service of equitable student outcomes. Direct experience working with at-risk student populations, particularly English Learners.
  • Deep knowledge of research and best practices regarding special education, multi-tiered systems of support, social-emotional learning, and behavioral support. Familiarity with education policy nationally is a plus.
  • Track record of success contributing to growth of an organization’s impact through partnership and business development. Ability to leverage your existing professional network for new growth opportunities; non-CA network a strong plus.
  • Very strong project management skills, including the ability to develop and manage project plans, set priorities, manage self and a diverse group of stakeholders to deadlines and deliverables, manage “up” and “across” regardless of positional authority, and ensure achievement of project goals.
  • Strong content development skills, including developing meeting materials, training and/or workshop materials, and/or other support materials (e.g., toolkits, resource libraries) and developing polished products for the longer term. Excellent writing skills.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, summarizing, and utilizing qualitative and quantitative data to inform project decisions, future programming, or policy decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work with diverse groups and individuals, and with educators and partner organizations.
  • Superb facilitation skills, including the capacity to facilitate meetings, trainings, workshops, and technical assistance engagements (e.g., professional learning sessions, coaching).
  • Proficiency in project management tools or track record of learning similar tools quickly (e.g., Asana); proficiency with Microsoft/Google Suites, particularly Excel/Google Sheets for data analysis and PowerPoint/Google Slides for communication/facilitation; experience with Stata a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years of relevant work experience required. Master’s Degree in related field strongly preferred. History of holding organizational leadership roles, and previous people management experience.
