Research Manager

About the Position

At Pivot, we look for talented and inspiring colleagues who believe in public education and the imperative to support schools to innovate and improve. We are currently seeking a Research Manager to join the Pivot team. This position will be responsible for managing a portfolio of applied research projects, including one focused on measuring the usability of instructional materials and another focused on assessing the quality of school assignments for English Learners.

As the primary driver of these research projects, this position will be responsible for ensuring the successful completion of all project deliverables, including:

  • Developing and maintaining productive relationships with districts, educators, and research partners;
  • Designing the research plan, developing data collection tools, and overseeing data collection, analysis and quality assurance;
  • Developing and finalizing reports and other deliverables; and
  • Driving the dissemination of reports and other deliverables.

This is a full-time, Exempt position, reporting to the Director of Research and Evaluation. Candidates for this position can be based anywhere in the US. Pivot is headquartered in Oakland, CA, and we anticipate Bay Area staff returning to an in-office setting at a future date. All staff are currently working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Once travel is considered safe, future travel (car and air) will be required for this role, including regular travel in/to California.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and ongoing management of project plans for each research effort, and successfully execute on these plans, achieving major deliverables against deadlines. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to manage project resources (e.g., budget, staff/contractor time, district partners’ time).
  • Design research plans and lead execution, including developing data collection tools, collecting data, analyzing data (directly, or via other staff or contractors) and crafting research findings.
  • Collaborate with key partners to ensure relevance of our research projects, including building productive relationships with school districts, educators, researchers, education nonprofits, and state/federal policymakers.
  • Drive the dissemination strategy for each research report or any other external deliverables. This includes developing a dissemination plan, presenting findings to varied audiences, and coordinating with internal staff on marketing/communications efforts.

  • A passion for Pivot’s vision and mission, a commitment to public education as a key lever for opportunity, and a desire to deepen the organization’s impact. A deep understanding of institutional and structural racism and bias, and how inequities impact equitable outcomes for students most underserved by our education system.
  • Experience working in and/or with K–12 education via Local Education Agencies (county offices, districts, or charters), especially those that implement high-quality English Language Arts (ELA) and Math curricula in service of equitable student outcomes.
  • Knowledge of current research regarding curriculum quality and curriculum implementation. Familiarity with education policy in California and nationally is a plus, as is familiarity with Common Core State Standards.
  • Experience collecting, organizing, managing, and analyzing qualitative data.
  • Project management skills, including the ability to prioritize, organize, and handle multiple tasks.
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to write for diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work with diverse groups and individuals, and with educators and partner organizations.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5-10 years of relevant work experience required. Master’s degree in related field preferred.
