About the Position

At Pivot, we look for talented and inspiring colleagues who believe in public education and the imperative to support schools to innovate and improve. We are currently seeking a Vice President of Communications to join the Pivot/CORE team.

As the senior communications leader, this new role will be responsible for overseeing communications and  marketing across Pivot and CORE, and ensuring marketing alignment with product development. We expect that these efforts, together, will build awareness of Pivot/CORE’s work, grow our partnerships with districts and charters, and position Pivot/CORE as a leader in the national K–12 education landscape.

This is a full-time, Exempt position, reporting to the Chief Growth Officer. Pivot/CORE is currently a virtual organization, with the majority of staff based in California. Candidates for this position can be based anywhere in the US, and this is a remote role based out of your home office. This position will require occasional travel to client sites across the country, and regular travel to Pivot/CORE internal meetings and events; we expect that required travel will resume in early 2022, depending on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Key Responsibilities:

The Vice President of Communications will set vision and manage execution of the communications and marketing across Pivot/CORE. The overarching responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining clear Pivot, CORE, and Pivot/CORE voices and brands across all communications, marketing, and product materials.
  • Developing and implementing overall communications and marketing strategies, and ensuring these strategies and plans are aligned with product development strategy and priorities.
  • Identifying priority audiences; developing and distributing regular communications for each priority audience, including positioning Pivot/CORE as a thought leader in the sector; overseeing the development and dissemination of marketing materials and products for these audiences; and ensuring that such endeavors facilitate new partnerships with districts/charters.
  • Managing a current team of two direct reports and overseeing contract marketing support.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating an annual communications strategy to reach all priority audiences, build Pivot/CORE’s brand and visibility, and establish Pivot/CORE as a thought leader in instructional improvement and disrupting inequities in K–12 public education.
  • Ensuring Pivot and CORE websites are consistent with voice and brand requirements, and that they meet user needs. This includes ongoing identification of opportunities to improve and enhance websites.
  • Creating and overseeing a social media strategy to increase brand awareness and credibility, including potentially engaging an external vendor to execute this strategy.
  • Leading internal communications to a growing staff, currently approximately 40 people across the country.
  • Cultivating and managing relationships with media contacts.

  • Overseeing all marketing strategy and execution, ensuring marketing efforts (in partnership with the current team) engage key audiences, and lead to measurable action.

Product Development

  • Ensuring marketing and communications efforts are aligned with product development, in order to ensure that products respond to market/user needs.

  • A passion for Pivot/CORE’s vision and mission, an enduring commitment to public education as a key lever for opportunity, and a desire to deepen the organization’s impact.
  • A deep understanding of institutional and structural racism and bias, and how racial and other inequities impact outcomes for historically underserved students.
  • Significant experience in the K–12 education sector, and a strong knowledge of the educational landscape nationally, including current policy issues.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and excellent editing skills.
  • Strong people manager with a demonstrated commitment to building team members’ capacity and skills, and a track record of leading and developing an engaged, diverse, and effective small team.
  • Thrives under ambiguity, takes initiative, and is able to work independently.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, plus ten years of progressive experience in related communications, marketing, and/or product roles. Strong track record of results achieving related goals for organizations.
